Welcome to the Drukpa Wikipedia
Established in 1206 by Tsangpa Gyare and named after an event where nine dragons flew up into the sky with thunder - "Drukpa" - its followers practice the Vajrayana "indestructible vehicle" form of Buddhism. These followers seek the realisation of the nature of reality - the Enlightenment of the Buddhas. The methods for achieving this awakened state within one lifetime were developed by the forefathers of the lineage, and then passed on (and further developed) by the successive Gyalwang Drukpas to subsequent generations - the Drukpa Lineage of transmission and practice of the Mahamudra teachings.A structured organisation of monasteries and nunneries, with whom are associated Rinpoches, Tulkus, Lamas, yogis & yoginis and lay practitioners help to facilitate this propogation of the Dharma. The boddhisattva ideal of benefitting other sentient beings is also currently applied to other humanitarian projects, such as the restoration of Namdruk monastery in Tibet, the Druk Amitabha Mountain in Kathmandu (Nepal) and the Druk White Lotus School in Shey (Ladakh). Recently, the "Live to Love" initiative was launched.
Originally practiced in the area surrounding the Himalayas, such as Tibet, Bhutan, Nepal, Sikkim and India, the vajrayana schools have spread to Europe and the Americas, where there are now many Drukpa Centres set up by the students of His Holiness the 12th Gyalwang Drukpa.
Watch the award-winning documentary video, Tashi Jong:A Tradtional Tibetan Community in Exile as seen on PBS. This video was edited by Nathaniel Dorsky, Narrated by Dechen, and directed by Barbara Green in 1998. It is now 50 years since Tibetans fled into exile. This film remains a testament to the enduring vision of the 8th Khamtrul Rinpoche and the spirit, strength, courage and faith of the people of the Tashi Jong Community.
